Do I need a Coinbase account or KYC to receive x402 payments?

Quick answer: no identity check is documented for receiving x402 payments to a wallet you control, and you do not need a Coinbase account to do it. The buyer pays the payTo address in your 402 response. No doc we checked asks sellers for KYC, but treat that as not documented rather than ruled out. What you may need is an account with the facilitator that verifies and settles payments: no setup on the x402.org testnet facilitator, no API key within PayAI’s free allowance, and a CDP API key for Coinbase’s facilitator on mainnet.

1. What each facilitator asks of a seller

Checked against each provider’s own docs on 2026-10-17. “Not stated” means we did not find it in the docs; it does not mean it never happens.

x402.orgNone. The x402 docs list its requirements as “None”: it “requires no setup” and is testnet only (x402 docs). Its live supported list showed no Base mainnet on 2026-10-17.Not statedNot stated
CDP (Coinbase)CDP account and API key ID + secret. The FAQ says that is “enough to run a seller if payments go to an address you already control.” A wallet secret is needed only if CDP should create the receiving wallet for you. Business Checkouts (a payable x402 link, no server) need a Coinbase Business account with a CDP API key.Not statedOFAC and KYT checks decline payments involving sanctioned or high-risk addresses (CDP Facilitator).
PayAINo API key for ordinary exact payments within 1,000 free credits per receiving wallet (lifetime); some older wallets keep a legacy 10,000-credit allowance, and requests from shared hosts or IP addresses also draw from a shared pool, so they can hit the limit sooner. Beyond that, a key and credits; agents can buy both over x402 without a portal signup, but a paying wallet already linked to a portal account gets credits only, not a new agent key (pricing, authentication). Not statedNot stated

2. Where screening does happen

Both screen wallets and transactions. Neither, in the docs we read, asks a seller for a passport or ID.

3. A working setup with no Coinbase account

This store is an example. It sells its kit for 29 USDC on Base to a self-custody wallet, and it does not use a facilitator for settlement at all: the buyer sends USDC directly, and the store checks the transfer onchain before releasing the file. No Coinbase account, no CDP key and no identity check were needed to set it up. The trade-off is that a buyer’s agent cannot complete an automatic x402 settlement here; to support that, add a facilitator from the table above.

4. Pick a path

  1. Just testing? Use the x402.org facilitator on Base Sepolia; it requires no setup. See how to test x402 on Base Sepolia.
  2. Going live with no account? PayAI’s free allowance needs no API key for ordinary exact payments. Compare limits and fees in the facilitator cost calculator.
  3. Want Bazaar indexing? Coinbase says the CDP Facilitator indexes endpoints that advertise Bazaar metadata after it settles a payment, which needs a CDP API key. See choosing a mainnet facilitator and what each facilitator costs.
  4. Check the result: run your endpoint through the free x402 checker, then see where it is listed with the listing checker.

5. KYC is not the same as tax

Not needing an identity check does not make the income invisible. For US tax purposes, the IRS says digital assets are property, not currency, and that income from digital assets is taxable. Federal returns, including Form 1040, ask whether during the tax year you received a digital asset (as a reward, award or payment for property or services) or sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of one (IRS: digital assets). This is not legal or tax advice.

FAQ

Do I need KYC to receive x402 payments?

No identity check is documented for receiving. x402 pays the payTo address you put in your 402 response, and that can be a wallet you hold the keys to. None of the facilitator docs we checked on 17 October 2026 (CDP, PayAI, x402.org) describe seller identity verification. CDP’s Facilitator page describes OFAC and Know Your Transaction (KYT) screening of payments and addresses instead; PayAI and x402.org docs do not describe screening. Treat seller KYC as not documented rather than ruled out, because terms can change.

Do I need a Coinbase account to accept x402 payments?

Only if you take one of Coinbase’s two paths. The CDP Facilitator authenticates with a CDP API key ID and secret; Coinbase’s FAQ says that is “enough to run a seller if payments go to an address you already control.” Business Checkouts, which give you a payable x402 link with no server of your own, need a Coinbase Business account with a CDP API key. Outside Coinbase, the x402.org facilitator requires no setup but is testnet only, and PayAI needs no API key for ordinary exact payments within its free allowance.

Does the CDP Facilitator screen payments?

Yes. Coinbase says it runs OFAC and Know Your Transaction (KYT) checks that decline payments involving sanctioned or high-risk addresses. That screens wallets and transactions; it is not an identity check of the seller.

Do I still owe tax on x402 income without KYC?

KYC and tax are separate questions. For US tax purposes, the IRS says digital assets are property, not currency, and that income from digital assets is taxable. Federal returns, including Form 1040, ask whether during the tax year you received a digital asset (as a reward, award or payment for property or services) or sold, exchanged or otherwise disposed of one. This is not tax advice; check the rules where you live.
